The Fan And The Bellows - The Chameleons
The Fan And The Bellows (The Chameleons)
(Mark, I warn you: you can't let your feelings run your life. I've seen. Mark
my words.)
A Beecher's Brook is love
A hurdle at which greater men have fallen
She manipulates
Steals my mind and hides it in her garden
But now
Only love can bring me down
Somehow
Somehow love must bring me down
I've become the fan and the bellows
Cupid masturbates
Absent of all thought and of all reason
Shoots me in the back
I think perhaps it must be shooting season
But now
Only love can bring me down
Somehow
Somehow love must bring me down
I've become the fan and the bellows
Not me...
Not me...
But now
Only love can bring me down
I've become the fan and the bellows
Somehow love must bring me down
I've become the fan and the bellows Alternative Lyrics from Marks songbook (Dearest dead days):A Beecher's Brook is love
A hurdle at which greater men
Have fallen
She manipulates
Steals my mind
And hides it in her garden
But now
Only love can bring her down
Somehow
Somehow love will bring me down
I've become the fan and the bellows
Cupid masturbates
Absent of all thought
And of all reason
Shoots me in the back
I think perhaps
It must be shooting season <return to top>
Nostalgia (The Chameleons)
Absorbing your words
Battles raging within me
Absorbing your words
Is gradually tearing my soul in two
There isn't much I could do
Despite my fear it helps to
Share my nostalgia with you
There isn't time to stand still
We are constantly changing
You're draining my will
I find myself rearranging my points of view
There isn't much I could do
Despite my fear it helps to
Share my nostalgia with you
Tomorrow I remember yesterday
Tomorrow, remember yesterday
Tomorrow, remember yesterday
Tomorrow I remember yesterday
Whatever lies in my past
Or what is yet in the future
Time passes so fast
Suppose there's always the danger
I won't pull through
I'll have to think this thing through
Despite my fear it helps to
Share my nostalgia with you
Tomorrow I'll remember yesterday
Tomorrow I remember yesterday
Tomorrow, remember yesterday
Tomorrow, remember yesterday
Tomorrow, remember yesterday...
Tomorrow, nostalgia will lead me away Alternative Lyrics from Marks songbook (Dearest dead days):Absorbing your words
Battles raging within me
Absorbing your words
Is gradually tearing my soul in two
There's nothing more I can do
Despite my fear
It helps to share my nostalgia with you
There isn't time to stand still
We are constantly changing
You're draining my will
I find myself rearranging
My points of view
Tomorrow I'll remember yesterday
What ever lies in my past
Or what is yet in the future
Time passes so fast
I suppose there's always the danger
I won't pull through
I'll have to think it all through
Despite my fear
It helps to share my nostalgia with you <return to top>
Less Than Human (The Chameleons)
Notes by Mark - Again this was one of the first songs we did together and we just jammed it out in a few minutes at a rehearsal. My big mouth has always got me into trouble, more so in those days and I think I must have been feeling guilty about something. The second verse came much later and stemmed from a conversation I'd had with a girl friend. Although the original was produced with Lillywhite the version on 'Script' was re-recorded for the album. The whirly pipes at the end (a child's toy that you can still buy at fairgrounds or at the sea-side) was originally Lillywhite's suggestion after we'd used them on the compilation version of 'Here Today'. We repeated it here, my favourite element in the song. Must have died a thousand times
Must have died a thousand times
Must have died a thousand times
Feeling less than human
I surmise
I'm less than human in God's eyes
Time he's on our side she said
Time he's on our side she said
Time he's on our side she said,
But it makes no difference in the end
He's coming after you my friend
I must have cried a thousand times
I must have cried a thousand times
I must have cried a thousand times
Feeling less than human
I surmise
I'm less than human in God's eyes Alternative Lyrics from Marks songbook (Dearest dead days):I must have died a thousand times
Feeling less than human
I surmise
I'm less than human in God's eyes
Time he's on my side, She said
He may be on your side, I said
But it makes no difference in the end
He's coming after you my friend
I must have cried a thousand times
Feeling less than human
I surmise
I'm less than human in God's eyes <return to top>
In Shreds (The Chameleons)
I grasp at life's fading light
I need you tonight
I need to be heard
Your actions speak louder than words
Ignored by you all
I stumble and fall
I suddenly knew
My life meant nothing at all
In shreds, I stare down at the street
Yearning for sleep
That blissful escape
But when it comes it's always too late
The whore in my bed
The noise in my head
A hole in my pride
It's coming and there's nowhere to hide
It seems to me to be self-contradictory
It seems to me you count your victories while they're there
Ignored by you all
I stumble and fall
I suddenly knew
My life meant nothing at all
The whore in my bed
The noise in my head
The hole in my pride
It's coming and there's nowhere to hide
It seems to me to be self-contradictory
It seems to me you count your blessings while they're there
You count your blessings while they're there
Count your victories while they're there
It seems, it seems, it seems
It seems to me
To be
To be self-contradictory
It seems to me you've become part of the machinery
Part of the machinery
Part of the machinery
Become part of the machinery
Machinery Alternative Lyrics from Marks songbook (Dearest dead days):I grasp at life's fading light

Turn To The Vices (The Chameleons)
We're clinging together
We're clinging together
We're clinging together forever and ever
We're singing the same songs
We're singing the same songs
We're singing the same songs they go on and on and on
Oh no no no no no
So who can we turn to and what can we turn to
Who can we turn to and what can we turn to now
We turn to the vices
Embracing the vices
We turn to the vices and other niceties
Oh no no no no no
We're clinging together
We're clinging together
We're clinging together forever and ever amen
We're singing the same songs
We're singing the same songs
We're singing the same songs they go on and on and on
Which brings us back to zero
No no no no no no...
Oh no no no no no no
In times of crisis, we turn to the vices...
Vices in, vices in, vices in... <return to top>
Love Is (The Chameleons)
Reeling with confusion
You always fill my head with useless information
And it's contributing to my frustration
If I shout or if I scream
It's just a reflex reaction
And it's always aimed at you
You think my efforts are pointless
And handled in a way that is totally thoughtless
Defending all you love
But the enemy's faceless
It's a cancer and a cure must always elude us
As it eats its way through you
But this feeling's rebounding off you
But this feeling's rebounding off you
But is this the best we can do?
But this feeling's rebounding off you
Reeling with confusion
You always fill my head with useless information
And it's contributing to my frustration
If I shout or if I scream
It's just a reflex reaction
And it's always aimed at you
But this feeling's rebounding off you
But this feeling's rebounding off you
But is this the best we can do?
But this feeling's rebounding off you <return to top>
Every Day I'm Crucified (The Chameleons)
There must be a reason for living
There must be a reason for living
I think I know how Christ felt when they nailed him to the cross
There must be a reason for living
There must be a reason for living
I think I know how Christ felt when they killed him on that hill
Pissed off
I'm searching for some kind of meaning
I'm searching for some kind of meaning
The fools lead the fools and it's the blind who lead the blind
I'm searching for some kind of meaning
I'm searching for some kind of meaning
In the narrowness of vision
And the narrowness of mind
I know this place is very strange
But the meaning's clear to me
There's so much we could be learning
If we could only learn to see
I'm searching for some kind of meaning
There must be a reason for living
But every day I'm crucified by triviality
Every day I'm crucified by triviality
Every day I'm crucified by everything I see Alternative Lyrics from Marks songbook (Dearest dead days):There must be a reason for living
I'm wondering how Christ felt
When they nailed him to the tree
There must be a reason for living
I think I know how Christ felt
When they nailed him on that hill
Catch 22 you see
I'm searching for some kind of meaning
Fools lead fools
And the blind man leads the blind
I'm searching for some kind of meaning
In the narrowness of vision
And the narrowness of mind
I know this place is very strange
But the meaning's clear to me
There's so much we could be learning
If we could only learn to see
I'm searching for some kind of meaning
There must be a reason for living
But every day I'm crucified
By everything I see <return to top>
Endlessly Falling (The Chameleons)
Talk about the state of things
I don't know what they mean
If you keep your mind intact
Surely that's a victory,
Surely that's a victory
Falling
I am falling again
Falling
I am endlessly falling
Constantly falling my friend
Your wealth and your kingdom and your crown
Lies between your thighs
Along with your spheres of thought
O come let us adore him
Or maybe we should mourn him
Falling
I am falling again
Falling
I am endlessly falling
Constantly falling my friend
Your ego is your closest friend
Never lets you down
The hunter and the predator
But you are just a victim
You are just a victim
Falling
I am falling again
Falling
I am endlessly falling
Constantly falling my friend Alternative Lyrics from Marks songbook (Dearest dead days):a.k.a. Falling From Grace With Myself Again (?)
You talk about the state of things
I don't know what they mean
If I keep my mind intact
Surely that's a victory
Falling, yes I'm falling my friend
Falling, from grace with myself again
Your wealth and your kingdom
And your crown
Lies between your thighs
Along with your spheres of thought
Oh come let us adore him
Me, I'd rather mourn him
Falling, yes I'm falling my friend
Falling, from grace with myself again
Your ego is your closest friend
Never lets you down
The hunter and the predator
And you are just the victim
Falling <return to top>
Nathan's Phase (The Chameleons)
Of all the faces that you wear
Sometimes joy, sometimes despair
The mask has gone, no mystery
Replaced by vague transparency
Oh, it's just a phase you're going through
It's you
It's just a phase you're going through
The streets of London paved with lead
Just as my lungs are paved with Leb
Brush the cobwebs from my head
Feels like I'm stapled to this bed
Oh, it's just a phase you're going through
It's you
It's just a phase you're going through
The streets of London paved with lead
Just as my lungs are paved with Leb
Brush the cobwebs from my head
Feels like I'm stapled to this bed
Oh, it's just a phase you're going through
It's you
It's just a phase you're going through
Out of tune
Yeah, with this phase you're going through
Sod Alternative Lyrics from Marks songbook (Dearest dead days):Through all the faces that we wear
Sometimes joy, sometimes despair
The mask has gone, no mystery
Replaced by fraud and trickery
It's just a phase you're going through
It's true
You're just a stranger passing through
Yes you know
The streets of London are paved with lead
Just like my lungs are paved with Leb
Brush the cob-webs from my head
Feels like I'm welded to this bed
It's just a phase you're going through
It's true
You're just a stranger passing through
Yes you know <return to top>
